Force Removal of SCCM Component Server Role

By January 15, 2016September 11th, 2020Blog, Microsoft, System Center 2012

While doing some Configuration Manager maintenance, I needed to completely remove a defunct site system. I removed all the roles that were still present but was unable to delete the site system because the Component Server role was still installed.

This role is supposed to be automatically removed when all other roles are removed, but it lingered. A site maintenance tasks would have probably cleaned it up eventually, but I needed to remove it sooner rather than later. So I forced the issue.

First, I opened the properties of the Site System role on the server I mean to delete and checked the “Require the site server to initiate connections to this site system” box.

I waited a few minutes to let Configuration Manager update itself, then, on the Primary Site Server, I restarted the SMS_SITE_COMPONENT_MANAGER service.

Then, refreshing the “Servers and Site System Roles” page in the Configuration Manager console only listed “Site System.” I was then able to right-click the system and choose delete.
