Exchange 2010 and Public Folder Management

“Those who do not learn from the past are doomed to repeat it.”  How true it is at times.  When dealing with Public Folders in Exchange, I always seem to forget that the account I am logged in as needs to have an email account on the system as well.

You get the following error if you don’t:

Can’t log on to the Exchange Mailbox server ‘server.domain.com’. No existing ‘PublicFolder’ matches the following Identity: ”. Make sure that you specified the correct ‘PublicFolder’ Identity and that you have the necessary permissions to view ‘PublicFolder’..

+CategoryInfo          :NotSpecified: (0:Int32) [Get-PublicFolder], MapiLogonFailedException
+ FullyQualifiedErrorId : F3822E88,Microsoft.Exchange.Management.MapiTasks.GetPublicFolder

After enabling my email account on the system, I could actually manage the Public Folders.  I have seen this before and each time it takes me a minute (or maybe 30) to realize what the issue is and correct it.  Hopefully by writing this blog entry I will remember faster next time (or maybe you won’t have to go through the same pain).
